MP101 Wireless Music Player Version 3.3.36 and Client Version 1.3.7

Published Nov. 22, 2004
Revised Feb. 23, 2006 to remove statements about supporting Radio@AOL.

This release previously supported Radio@AOL, however AOL decided to stop supporting custom DMA implementations of their client which the Media Server depends on.

This MP101 Media Server version 3.3.36 and client firmware version 1.3.7. These two upgrades are packaged as two .zip files that both must be downloaded.

To Upgrade

The server and client updates are two .zip files. There is a three-phase upgrade procedure:

Phase 1: Download and Install the Server Software.

  1. Using the PC where the NETGEAR Media Server software is running, download the Media Server (Non-US Customers). Be sure to right-click and select Save Target As or Save Link As.
  2. Unzip the files to a convenient location that you can remember, such as the Desktop. Do NOT run the .exe file from inside the unzip utility.
  3. Double-click the NETGEAR Media Server 3.3.36 folder to open it, and double-click MediaServer.exe to run the installer splash screen. Finally, click INSTALL Media Server Software to start the Media Server installer.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to upgrade the server. It may ask you to reboot your PC. Do so if instructed.

Phase 2: Download and Unzip the Firmware Files to the Proper Location.

  1. Using the PC where the NETGEAR Media Server software is running, download the new client firmware update (438 KB), to a convenient location that you can remember, such as the Desktop. Again, be sure to right-click and select Save Target As or Save Link As.
  2. Unzip the two files from the .zip file. Do NOT double-click the two files.
  3. Copy the files to C:\Program Files\NETGEAR\Media Server\Upgrade\. If you changed the installation destination during the install procedure, use that location instead.

Phase 3: Upgrade the Client Using the Remote Control.

  1. Be sure the NETGEAR Media Server software is running. You will see a blue and yellow music note icon in the system tray to the bottom right of your screen if it is running.
  2. Using the remote control for the MP101 device, turn the player off, then on again. Make sure the MP101 connects to the home network, and to the Media Server running on the PC.
  3. Use the remote control to select Setup > Maintenance > Upgrade. The display will show a series of messages as the upgrade is performed. When the upgrade is complete, the MP101 will reboot itself.
  4. The current firmware is shown when the MP101 boots. It is also available through Setup > Maintenance > About. The firmware version should indicate VA1.3.7RNG.2.
  5. To ensure a successful upgrade, use the remote control to select Setup > Maintenance > Reset Factory Defaults. The MP101 will reset its stored settings and reboot one last time. You will need to reconfigure any network settings when the MP101 restarts.

Modifications and Bug Fixes, Server version 3.3.36 and Client version 1.3.7

  • Updated and corrected the Media Server's help file.
  • Fixed a Media Server problem causing it to use all available memory, causing Windows to behave sluggishly and increase the disk space allocated to virtual memory.
  • Fixed a problem with the MP101 that sometimes caused HTTP streaming failures.
  • Fixed the compatibility problem with the Cisco VPN Client. See Known Issues below for caveats.

Known Issues, Server version 3.3.36 and Client version 1.3.7

  • There are still occasional streaming problems using wireless, which will be addressed in a future release.
  • Streaming eventually fails during high IP fragmentation (not common on normal home networks).
  • The Media Server has trouble with a large number of tracks, though it should perform better than previous versions in this regard.
  • If using the Cisco VPN Client on the Media Server PC, be sure to use the Set MTU utility (provided with the VPN Client) to set the MTU of the Local Area Connection to 1500. The MTU of the Cisco VPN Connection can be left at its default. When the MP101 searches for servers, it will find two instances of the same server. One of them will fail to connect, but the other one should work properly.

Separate Downloads Links

Caution! The first two downloads are very large. If you have a slower connection, the larger file may take a half hour or longer.
