How to troubleshoot when your wireless adapter could not connect using WPA2-PSK security?

How to troubleshoot when your wireless adapter could not connect using WPA2-PSK security?

Desription of the Problem:

Wireless Adapter is unable to connect to a wireless router when using the Windows XP wireless utility (WZC).

Symptoms:

Wireless adapter is able to connect when router is using WEP or WPA-PSK (TKIP). However, when router is set to WPA2-PSK (AES) or mix-mode (WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK) security, the adapter will not connect.

Resolution:

In order to establish a wireless connection using WPA2-PSK (AES) or mix-mode (WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK) security, please use one of the following solutions:

  1. Use the adapter’s NETGEAR wireless utility (Smart Wizard) instead of the Windows Wireless configuration utility.
  2. Install Windows Update KB893357 on your XP computer. Visit the following link to get more information and to download the Microsoft Windows update, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=662BB74D-E7C1-48D6-95EE-1459234F4483&displaylang=en.
  3. If the above do not work, consider changing the wireless security mode on the router to WEP or WPA-PSK (TKIP).
