MBM621 - Product FAQs

MBM621 - Product FAQs

What is the MBM621?

It is a Mobile Broadband Modem that connects you to the Internet using the 2G EDGE/GPRS or 3G HSDPA/UMTS data network access capacity delivered by your cellular / mobile wireless Service Provider. The WAN uplink is 2G/3G mobile wireless and the LAN link is 10/100 Ethernet. It is especially well suited for High Speed Internet Access in locations without Cable modem or DSL service.

Where can I use it?

At home or on the road wherever there is mobile wireless service.

What are the data rates?

Depending on the service provider coverage, the MBM621 delivers downloads up to 7.2 Mbps and upload data rates up top 384Kbps.

Does it have a battery for use while traveling?

No. There are external battery packs available that may be charged with AC power and then used for notebooks and the MBM621. Or, since it’s supplied with 12 volts, a cigarette lighter adapter kit with a compatible power adapter may be found at many electronics outlets (not offered by NETGEAR) for traveling.

Does it operate in licensed spectrum worldwide?

Yes.

Can I use it for multiple PC’s and other IP devices?

Yes, you may connect it to a Switch, WiFi AP or Wired gateway and serve several.

How does it obtain or assign an IP address to my PC(s)?

It can set up as a DHCP server or as a client. The DHCP server assigns IP addresses to your PCs.

Does it support QoS?

No.

What about using it in my Office?

In the office, besides the “normal use to deliver high speed Internet access, it may instead be connected to a dual WAN port data network switch and used for “backup Internet service” should the primary WAN link via DSL or cable modem suffer service interruption. This minimizes access cost in addition to maximizing productivity by allowing all to work even when there’s an outage.

Can I simply remove the SIM from my phone and use it in the MBM621 for temporary Internet access?

Yes, if data service is enabled on the SIM card.
