Using the PS121 Print Server through a VPN Tunnel

Using the PS121 Print Server through a VPN Tunnel

The PS121 utility cannot be used on a remote computer to configure a remote printer: Use these instructions instead.

Before starting, make sure:

  • You can ping and access resources through your VPN tunnel.
  • The remote PC must have the printer driver installed.
  • You computer must have the ability to print to the remote printer. That is, if your computer was on the same network as the remote printer, you would be able to print to it with no problem.

1. Go to the printer properties by right-clicking on the Printer in the “Printer and Faxes” section from your Start menu.

2. Click Add Port

3. Highlight Standard TCP/IP Port, and click New Port . The Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard window appears.

4. Click Next

5. Type the IP address of the PS121 on the other network over the VPN tunnel, and click Next. This IP address is different from your local IP address!

The first IP address in the "Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard" window below is the IP address of the PS121 from the VPN tunnel. The black command prompt window shows what you would see for the local IP address of the remote PC if you were looking at the network configuration (using a command called ipconfig).

6. Select Standard > Generic Network Card, and Next.

7. Review your IP address settings. The IP address after "Device" will be the IP address of the PS121 from the VPN tunnel. Click Finish.

8. Click Close to return to the Printer Properties page.

9. The last screenshot shows how the configuration you just set up would look connecting to an Epson printer. Your printer will be different, but the port selection should look similar. Click Apply, then Close to begin using your printer.
