Routers with Trend Micro have admin, Internet problems or anti-virus errors

Problem with router admin pages, Internet access, or anti-virus program on routers with Trend Micro security
  • If you can't remember, or lost the password, or are configuring your NETGEAR router for the first time, or have changed ISP, first see Forgotten or Lost Router Password.

Affected products: WGT624v3, WGT624SC, and other home routers with Trend Micro Security Service. You may have this problem if you bought a router, or upgraded the firmware in the last year.

Possible Symptoms

  • You cannot access the router's administration pages. However, you may be able to browse the Internet or ping the router.
  • When using DHCP, the connection fails ( when the IP address is renewed ). DHCP is often used by ISPs.
  • Bad packets from the router are reported by your anti-virus program such as Norton, or other intrusion detection program.

Cause

When a computer first connects to the Internet through the router, the NETGEAR Trend Micro security sends a request asking about the computer's operating system. If you are running an anti-virus program or other program which checks for intruders, it may see this harmless request as an attack. If the program responds by blocking your router's IP address, then browsing to Web pages may fail, as well as other Internet access.

Workarounds

Any of these three solutions may work. Do whichever is easiest for you, while at the same time keeping your network secure.

  1. Disable the Trend Micro Security Service. Unlike most router security, this is turned on by default.

1a. Open a browser, and log in the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm

1b. Click Security Service in the router menu.

1c. Uncheck Enable Trend Micro Security Service, and click Apply Later

  2. Update your anti-virus or other intrusion detection programs, if you have them. Recent versions may avoid flagging the ICMP packet which is incorrectly seen as a problem.
  3. Disable the feature in the anti-virus or intrusion detection program that allows the router's IP address to be "locked out".
