Troubleshooting Download Applications such as BitTorrent, eDonkey, eMule, and FlashGet

NETGEAR does not approve or support the use of its products for any illegal purpose, including but not limited to the violation of the intellectual property rights of other third parties.

You are personally and solely accountable for your use of NETGEAR's products, including but not limited to use of P2P applications with NETGEAR's products. You may be subject to legal penalties if you use P2P applications for an illegal purpose: MPAA Targets Core BitTorrent, eDonkey Users.

The information in this article (below) is provided for the limited purpose of showing that there is no technical fault in NETGEAR's equipment when used with a P2P application.

P2P applications download pieces of files from multiple Internet sources so that no single server is overloaded. The more connections the P2P client application finds, the faster your download.

Other applications such as FlashGet break the file into multiple pieces.

Various TCP and UDP ports are used. If the TCP or UDP connections are unregulated by you, the router can easily be overloaded. Instructions on how to avoid this depend on the P2P applications, generally 60 or fewer connections.

For these applications to work optimally:

  1. Configure a Custom Service specifying a name and the ports to be forwarded.
  2. Configure a Port Forwarding Rule using the Custom Service from Step 1 and point it to a specific computer.

Note: Outgoing ports usually do not need to be configured if all outgoing ports are allowed by the router to all the computers on the LAN.

Most NETGEAR routers support UPnP, and can automatically forward the ports to computers running these clients. However, some clients need their TCP/UDP ports manually configured.

Disabling Win XP SP2 Firewall or any other 3rd party firewalls may be necessary.

BitTorrent

  • Incoming TCP ports 6881-6889.
  • Outgoing TCP port 6969 for Tracker purposes.

BitTorrent clients include ABC, Azureus, BitTornado, and others. Most suggest restricting the upload and download connections and bit rates for best performance.

eDonkey

  • This recommends any TCP port from 1025-65535. This is user-configured on the client and the router.

eDonkey2000

  • TCP port 4661 to connect to the server.
  • TCP port 4662 to connect to other clients.
  • UDP port 4665 to send messages to servers other then the one you are connected to.

eMule

  • Forward incoming TCP ports 4662, 4711 and UDP 4672. They also suggest using Static IPs on the client computer.

FlashGet

  • Since this program downloads up to 10 parts of a file at the same time, and since most servers limit the maximum number of download connections, you may not see an improvement, or there may be other problems. If you have problems with FlashGet, use the normal Web browser function to download.
