WPN824 RangeMax™ Wireless Router: Product Information

Frequently Asked Information about the WPN802 RangeMax™ Wireless Access Point

What is RangeMax?

RangeMax is an advanced Smart MIMO (Multi-In, Multi-Out) technology using seven internal antennas. RangeMax constantly surveys your environment for physical barriers and interference, and adjusts the signal to compensate for performance-blockers. If you carry a laptop from the family room to the kitchen, RangeMax senses the change and selects from over 100 antenna configurations to deliver the fastest, clearest connection!

Where are the Antennas?

The access point uses seven interior antennas (they are not visible). You do not have to adjust the antennas or risk breaking them. Internal antennas also save space. The antennas turn off and on to adapt to the interference in the users operating environment. The blue LEDs that are visible in the "dome" represent the status of the antennas. When an antenna is on, the LED are on or are flashing.

The dome LEDs turn on when each of the seven antennas transmits. The antennas adapt to the interference in your environment. Because RangeMax is surveying to give the fastest connection, the lights are constantly changing. The lights are useful to monitor performance, and so cannot be turned off.

Is RangeMax Upgradeable to 802.11n?

The IEEE 802.11n standard was not ratified when the product began shipping, therefore NETGEAR cannot say that the RangeMax Wireless Access Points, Router or Adapters are upgradeable to, or even compatible with 802.11n.

Is the Access Point Compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g?

It is compatible with wireless 802.11b and 802.11g products. The mode options are:

  • 802.11g only — Only 802.11g wireless stations can be used.
  • 802.11g/802.11.b — 802.11g, 802.11b wireless stations can be used. This default allows access for both "g" and "b" wireless stations.
