Common Questions About XR, NETGEAR's New Extended Range Products

Common Questions About XR, the New Extended Range Feature

XR (Extended Range) gives the greatest wireless distance. This feature is available on selected NETGEAR routers and adapters starting September, 2004.

  • XR greatly improves error correction, and is less vulnerable to noise.
  • XR allows very weak signals before disconnecting. NETGEAR equipment trades distance for throughput: the longer the distance, the lower the throughput. Without XR, connections with weak signal strength are dropped. With XR, those connections can be maintained — at even lower throughput. This may be fine for applications such as email. It also makes it easier to troubleshoot in places where non-XR equipment can't connect at all.

NETGEAR Products Supporting XR

  • The new WGU624 router ships with XR.
  • The new WG511U adapter ships with XR.
  • The WGT624 router will have a firmware upgrade to support XR in the September timeframe.
  • The WGT634U router will have a firmware upgrade in the October timeframe.
  • WG511T, WAG511, WAG311, and WG311T will have firmware upgrades.

Depending on the mode selected, XR is automatically turned on. The adapters connect passively connect to an XR-enabled router. No configuration is needed.

XR clients such as the WG511U adapter can be used instead with non-XR equipment, if you like.
