Configuring Wireless Repeating with WG602 and WG302 Access Points

Configuring Wireless Repeating with WG602 and WG302 Access Points

Network repeating allows two distant sections of a wireless network to communicate. This explains how to do wireless repeating with NETGEAR access points.

Other models and firmware may work similarly to this example:

  • WG602v2 access point, firmware version 3.2 RC6.
  • WG302 access point, firmware version 2.0.3.
  • 64-bit or 128-bit WEP (optional).
  • Access control list (optional).
  • No WPA/PSK— This type of WPA security will not work with repeating.

In this example, the solid lines are a wired connection, the dotted line is the repeating link between access points, and the lightning bolt is a wireless station such as a laptop.

Be ready with:

‚ The MAC address of the WG602v2 access point (Found in the Information menu).
‚ The MAC address of the WG302 access point (Found under the General menu).
‚ The MAC addresses of the wireless stations that will connect to the access points.
‚ SSIDs for the access points.
‚ If using WEP, the WEP passphrase.

To Configure the WG302 Access Point

  1. On the administration screen, select Wireless Settings. The Wireless Settings window appears.
  2. Enter an SSID for the WG302.
  3. Select a channel. Both access points must use the same channel.
  4. Click Apply.
  5. (Optional) If using WEP, select Security > WEP/WPA Settings, otherwise go to Step 6.
    1. Select Network Authentication > Shared Key. The WEP/WPA Settings window appears.
    2. Select Data Encryption > 64 bits WEP. (128 bit may be used instead, of course.)
    3. Enter a passphrase.
    4. Click Generate Keys.
    5. Click Apply.
  6. (Optional) Select Security > Access Control. The Access Control List window appears.
    1. Select the Turn Access Control On checkbox.
    2. Add the MAC addresses of the WG602v2 and all of the wireless devices that will connect to the WG302 and WG602v2.
    3. Click Apply.
  7. Select Advanced > Advanced Access Point Settings. The Advanced Access Point Settings window appears.
  8. Select the Enable Wireless Bridging and Repeating checkbox.
  9. Select the Repeater with Wireless Client Association radio button.
  10. Enter the WG602v2’s MAC address in the Remote MAC Address text box.
  11. Click Apply.

To Configure the WG602v2 Access Point

The two access points are configured similarly. The screens for the WG602v2 may look different, but the information entered is essentially the same: You need to set the channels, SSID, WEP, and WPA in the same way. If you use a MAC control list on one access point, then use it on the other, too.

  1. Return to the beginning of the WG302 instructions. On each screen that you entered data, enter the same parameters, except replacing the WG602v2's MAC address with the WG302's MAC address. The screens for the WG602v2 are:
    • Setup > Wireless Settings
    • Setup > Security Settings
    • Setup > Access Control
    • Advanced > Wireless Bridging
  2. Here's the final screen:
  3. Select the Repeater with Wireless Client Association radio button.
  4. Enter the WG302’s MAC address in the Remote MAC Address text box. A Remote Access Point is added to the Wireless Remote Access Point List, showing the access points are bridging/repeating with each other.
