What is Significant About the FM114P?

FM114P has network security with three significant features not in conventional NAT routers:

a. Denial of Service (DoS) prevention through Stateful Packet Inspection
b. Logging, reporting and alerts (Intrusion Detection System)
c. Static content filtering (URL, URL keywords)

How Easy is It to Connect to the Internet?

You set up the FM114P using a Web browser. Simply connect your Cable/DSL modem to the WAN port on the back, connect computers to the LAN ports, then configure the FM114P by typing "192.168.0.1" in the browser address. After logging in, launch the Smart Wizard to finish configuration

To use the FM114P, you need an Ethernet adapter and a broadband Internet connection. The FM114P works with most cable and DSL Internet Service Providers, however some ISPs require some special configuration (i.e., host name, domain name, etc). The modem needs an Ethernet port to connect to the router.

Along with firewall functionality, the FM114P comes with Freedom Anti-virus and privacy software from Zero Knowledge Systems. This one-year subscription service is free with the purchase. The software can be used on up to 8 PCs on the LAN. Other upgrades that are available if you have more than 8 computers, or wish to take advantage of other security functionality offered by ZKS.

What are the Differences Between the FM114P Wireless Firewall and the Previous MR314 Wireless Router?

The FM114P has new features that provide better performance and value than the MR314. Specifically, the FM114P has:

a. Better firewall functionality
b. An improved user interface to get your network up and running quicker
c. A faster microprocessor (75Mhz) and 10/100 WAN port for better throughput/security
d. Remote management functionality for easy multi-site deployment
e. Print server functionality
f. Detachable antenna

Remote Management

Remote management can be done via the web. You can set up remote management to allow for anyone, a particular range of IP addresses, or a specific IP address to remotely manage the device.

VPN

The FM114P supports VPN passively through IPSec, L2TP and PPTP pass-through functionality. This means a tunnel can be established through the firewall when used in conjunction with VPN client software. It supports pass-through mode only. If you need a product that can initiate and terminate IPSec VPN tunnels, consider the FVS318 ProSafe VPN Firewall.

A 10/100Mbps WAN port

The 10/100 port can connect to higher speed broadband services (greater than 10 Mbps). While these high-speed services do not enjoy widespread availability yet, the FM114P provides a migration path. Many routers do not have this capability.

DMZ Support

The FM114P supports an exposed host, otherwise known as a “DMZ”. This allows you to set a Web server or computer used for games, outside the firewall.
