Connecting Intel Centrino-Based Wireless Cards to NETGEAR Routers in Windows XP

Connecting Intel Centrino-Based Wireless Cards to NETGEAR Routers in Windows XP

These instructions are correct for NETGEAR routers such as MR814v2 and WGR614. The general process probably works for other NETGEAR routers.

Configure XP and Intel Wireless Card to Be Compatible

Disable IEEE 802.1 (if enabled):

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections.
  2. Right-click Wireless Network Connection, select Properties.
  3. Unselect Authentication > Enable network access control using IEEE 802.1X.

Uninstall WPA Patch (if installed):

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Select Add/Remove Windows Componants
  3. Scroll down, looking for WPA Patch Q815485. If present, click Change/Remove. If not present, go to the next section "Update the NETGEAR Router.)
  4. Click Next. A pop-up window appears ending with "Do you want to remove Windows XP Q815485?"
  5. Click Yes.

Update the NETGEAR Router

  1. Find the latest firmware for your router.
  2. Read the "Release Notes" to make sure the upgrade is suitable for your situation.
  3. Upgrade to the lastest firmware.

Configure the INTEL Card

  1. In Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 LAN MiniPCI, click Advanced > Power Management, unselect Use Default.
  2. Set bar to highest setting.
