The FA311 Adapter Drivers Won't Install, or Windows Won't Recognize Them

If, after installing the Ethernet card, there is the message "Windows was unable to find a driver for this device", then follow the instructions under "Situation 1". Otherwise, follow the instructions for "Situation 2". This applies to Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows 2000.

Situation 1: During installation this error appears "Windows was unable to find a driver for this device"

  1. If, in the Device Manager, the card is listed under "Other Devices" as either a "PCI Ethernet Controller" or a "Netgear FA311" with an exclamation point, skip step 1, and go to Step 4.
  2. Restart your computer. The message "Windows has not installed a driver for this device" appears.
  3. Click Finish. Windows starts.
  4. Right-click My Computer > Properties > Device Manager. (In Windows 2000, after selecting Properties, click the Hardware tab to get to the Device Manager button.)
  5. Highlight PCI Ethernet Controller or Netgear FA311 with an exclamation point under Other Devices, and select Properties.
  6. Make sure the General tab is selected. Below, it reads "The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)".
  7. Click Reinstall Driver. The wizard searches for updated drivers for "PCI Ethernet Controller".
  8. Click Next. A message "What do you want Windows to do?" appears.
  9. Select Display a list and click Next. (Windows ME asks, "What do you want to do?") Select Specify the location of the driver (Advanced), click NEXT.
  10. Select Display a list and click Next. The message "Select the type of a device from the list below" appears.
  11. Highlight Network Adapter and click Next. A Have Disk screen appears.
  12. The message "Insert the manufacture's installation disk into the drive below." appears. If the box below does not read "A:", change it.
  13. Click OK. The message "Please insert the disk labeled Netgear FA311 Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter" appears.
  14. Click OK. A "Copying Files" screen appears. Make sure the path is set to "A:".
  15. Click OK.
  16. Select Netgear FA311 Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter.
  17. Click OK. The next screen reads "Windows is ready to install the drivers".
  18. Click Next or OK. Windows either installs the drivers or reads "Error Installing the Device. Windows was unable to install the Netgear FA311 Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter".
  19. Click OK. The next screen reads, "Windows encountered an error while trying to install this device. Error code 1F6".
  20. Click Finish. If asked to restart, click NO. The General tab for the Properties of the Netgear FA311 shows.
  21. Close the Properties box.
  22. Note! Leave the "Disable in this profile" box checked and close the window!
  23. Click Refresh. (The NETGEAR card is not listed in the Device Manager until clicking Refresh.) Under Network Adapters in the Device Manager the FA311 is listed with a red X or yellow exclamation point.
  24. Highlight the card and select Properties.
  25. Select the Driver > Update Driver and install the drivers.
  26. Go to Situation 2, Step 1.

Situation 2: When the FA311 Drivers Will Not Install

  1. Restart your computer. The "Add New Hardware Wizard" starts. This reads "The wizard searches for updated drivers for: PCI Ethernet Controller."
  2. Click Next. "What do you want Windows to do?" appears.
  3. Select "Search for the best drivers", and click Next. "Windows will search for new drivers in its driver database" appears.
  4. Select "Specify location". Make sure it says only A: and click OK. "Windows driver file search for the device Netgear FA311 Fast Ethernet Adapter" appears.
  5. Click Next. The message, "Please insert disk labeled Netgear FA311 Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter Drivers Disk" appears.
  6. Leave the NETGEAR floppy disk in the drive, and click OK.
  7. If this message displays "The File FA311ND3.SYS cannot be found", insert the disk Netgear FA311, and click OK. Below the window, it reads "Copying files from" Make sure the path is changed to A: It may ask again for the NETGEAR FA311 disk.
  8. If this message displays "The File FA311NDx.SYS cannot be found" (Notice the x instead of a 3), then run setup again. Sometimes it must be run several times before the message does not display.
  9. If this message displays: "Please insert disk labeled Windows 98/95/00/ME and press OK", then follow the instructions. If the Windows CD is not found, make sure path is X:win98, X:win95, or X:win9x (for Windows ME). Replace X with your CD drive letter.
  10. The message "Windows is finished installing the drivers for this device appears. Click Finish to finish setting up your device." appears. Click Finish.
  11. The message "To finish setting up your device Windows must restart your computer, do you want to restart your Computer?" appears. Click YES.
