FVS318 Router: Product Information

FVS318 Router: Product Information

This describes the distinctive features of the FVS318 router.

To use the FVS318, you need an Ethernet adapter and a broadband Internet connection. Your modem must have an Ethernet port to connect to the router. The FVS318 works with most cable and DSL service providers.

The FVS318 can be set up easily using a Web browser. Simply connect your Cable or DSL modem to the WAN port on the back, connect computers to the LAN ports, then configure by typing 192.168.0.1 in the browser. Log in, and launch the Smart Wizard to finish configuration.

PPPoE and PPTP client functions are supported. NetBEUI is not.

NETGEAR offers the VPN product ProSafe VPN Client Software. Pre-sales information is available on this page, and support information is available on this page. The support information includes various VPN notes and manuals, as well as detailed configuration studies.

Major FVS318 Features

  • Supports 8 simultaneous VPN connections
  • Supports 253 local users
  • Setup Wizard automatically detects your Internet connection type
  • Provides Web URL keyword filtering
  • Provides e-mail notification of security incidents and logs
  • Dynamic DNS support allows VPN to locations with changing IP addresses
  • Remote management
  • A built-in 8-port 10/100Mbps auto-sensing switch supporting 10Mbps and 100Mbps
  • Detects the correct connection (either MDI or MDI-X) when connecting to other LAN devices, eliminating the need for crossover cables and “uplink switches”
  • Works with Windows, Macintosh, and Linux computers using TCP/IP and a browser

What are the Differences Between the FVS318, and the Previous Model FV318?

  • No user limitations
  • Support for 8 VPN tunnels (FV318 has support for 5.)
  • An improved user interface to get your network up and running more quickly
  • One of the lowest price-per-port of any comparable VPN product in the industry
  • A wider array of compatibility with other VPN products

How Do I Make a Single VPN Connection?

At each end you must have a device that can establish a VPN tunnel using IPSec protocols (PPTP will not work). With an FVS318 at one end:

  • You can connect to a remote network using another FVS318 or other compatible VPN router.
  • You can connect from a remote computer, such as a mobile user, using VPN client software on the remote computer.
  • You can connect from a remote computer, such as a home user behind a non-VPN router that supports VPN pass-through, using VPN client software on the remote computer.
  • For remote computers, use the NETGEAR ProSafe VPN Client Software described earlier.

    Are Multiple Site VPNs Supported?

Use the rules for multiple sites, using the same client software or firewall router for each.

Which Other Routers Are Compatible with VPN Features?

The FVS318 was tested by the VPN Consortium to be interoperable with many other VPN devices using industry-standard IPSec protocols. NETGEAR provides support for connections between NETGEAR VPN Firewalls, and between NETGEAR VPN Firewalls, and NETGEAR or SafeNet VPN Clients for Windows. However, it is not possible for NETGEAR to provide specific technical support for interconnection to every VPN products. Refer to the NETGEAR Web site for VPN application information.
