Configuring SBC Yahoo! DSL with SpeedStream 5360 Modem

Configuring SBC Yahoo! DSL with SpeedStream 5360 Modem

Symptom

This article applies if you have trouble getting online using a NETGEAR router.

Cause

The setup Wizard/Configuration assistant detects the connection type as a Fixed IP (as opposed to PPPoE).

Resolution

  1. Power off the modem
  2. Power off the router.
  3. Power on the modem.
  4. Wait 2 minutes.
  5. Power on the router.

NOTE: If you have a newer router like a WGR614v5, just open a browser and follow on-screen instructions.

  6. Log in the router by typing http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 in a Web browser.
The username for the router is admin and the password is password (unless you changed them). Older routers have a password of 1234.
  7. Select Setup Wizard > Yes.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Click Next on the PPPoE Detected Screen.
  10. Type the username provided by your ISP in the Login text box and password in the Password text box.

NOTE: Do not type "netgear@sbcglobal.net" as shown in screenshot below, but instead use the computer username given to you by your ISP, for example: yourname@sbcglobal.net

  11. Make sure that the Service Name is blank.
  12. Change Idle Timeout to 0.
  13. Under Domain Name Server (DNS) Address, make sure that Get Automatically from ISP is selected.
  14. Click Apply.
