WG511 Adapter with Error Code 10

WG511 Adapter with Error Code 10

Note: For WG511(v1), this problem was fixed for with the latest driver, version 2.9 (currently in beta). Go to the WG511 Support Page to determine if you have this version. Note that the fix will not work for the other version, WG511v2.

This document is still relevant for WG511v2 users.

This error is caused by one of four situations. Start with the first step, immediately below, to determine whether you are in this special situation. If you are not, then stop after Step 3), and proceed to the "How Do I Fix Code 10..." question, below.

Question: Why is There a "Code 10" on My IBM Notebook?

Answer:
Start by Checking Whether You have TI PCI Controllers and PCMCIA controllers.

Workaround to Correct PCI Bus Power Management

  1. Select Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > PCMCIA adapters.
  2. These adapters are known to have problems (others may also have problems, too).
    • TI PCI-1410
    • TI PCI-1420
    • TI PCI-1450
    • TI PCI-1510
  3. Power off your notebook.
  4. Physically remove the WG511 card from the slot.
  5. Power on your notebook.
  6. Press F1 immediately during rebooting to enter BIOS setup utility
  7. Select Config and press Enter.
  8. Select Power and press Enter.
  9. Scroll down to PCI Bus Power Management.
  10. Press Enter and select Disable.
  11. Press F10 to save and exit.
  12. Press Yes to confirm and restart the notebook.
  13. Log in to the desktop.
  14. Physically insert WG511 card into the slot. The WG511 utility icon appears in the System Tray on the lower right of your screen.

Note: If you prefer not to turn off the PCI Bus Power Management on your system, you may need to use WG511 software v1.6 instead.

Known bug: WG511 does not work with some Compaq Presario 2800 TI PCI-1410. (The above Scenario 1 workaround does not apply.)

Question: How Do I Fix"Code 10" After Installing WG511 Software Version 2.1.0?

Answer: This happens upgrading from v1.6 to v2.1.0 using the "Repair" option. (The Repair option in v2.1.0 should not be used!) Find find which of these three cases applies to your situation:

Case 1: "Code 10" Shows by the Adapter in the Device Manager after Installing v2.1.0

  1. Search for file WG511DCB.arm. If it is there, then delete it.
    • Windows XP c:\windows\system32\drivers\WG511DCB.arm
    • Windows 2000 c:\winnt\system32\drivers\WG511DCB.arm
    • Windows 98SE and Windows Me c:\windows\system\WG511DCB.arm
  2. Physically REMOVE the adapter.
  3. REINSERT the adapter. Wait for the WG511 utility icon to show in the system tray.

Case 2: v1.6 is Installed, But You Made no Attempt Install v2.1.0 or v2.5.0.2

DO NOT run WG511v2502.exe, yet!

    1. Select Start > Program > WG511 Adapter > Uninstall WG511 Software.
    2. Run the v1.6 removal utility, and complete the instructions to complete the removal.
    3. Run the v2.5.0.2 installer, WG511v2502.exe.
    4. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.
    5. If the adapter utility icon does not display: remove and reinsert the adapter. For Windows 98SE or Windows Me, reboot the computer.

Case 3: There was Never WG511 Software Installed on Your Computer

  1. Unzip WG511v2502.zip.
  2. Run WG511v2502.exe.
  3. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.
