WGT624 Wireless Firewall Router: Product Information and How To's

WGT624 Wireless Firewall Router: Product Information and How To's

For top speed, the router needs to connect to compatible wireless adapter cards that match the WGT624's 108 Mbps. NETGEAR's WG511T Wireless PC Card is one such adapter. (The latest drivers may be needed.)

The current firmware allows the WGT624 to run in either the normal 802.11g mode or the 108 Mbps turbo mode. To run the WGT624 in turbo mode, you must use a compatible card. The WG511T supports this mode, and other NETGEAR cards will in the future.

A firmware upgrade for the WGT624 and driver update for the WG511T will be available allowing mix mode (802.11g and/or 108Mbps turbo ) operation. Both the router and the adapter will need updated firmware/driver to support this mixed mode operation.

The WGT624 router supports WPA in Pre-Shared Key Mode (PSK). The WPA-PSK passphrase is entered in Wireless Settings > Security Options. See What's New in Security: WPA, for an overview of WPA.

How Does the Firmware Upgrade Assistant Work?

This new feature automatically checks for new router firmware. If you click YES in the Firmware Upgrade Assistant page, the router contacts the Netgear FTP site and upgrades to the latest firmware when it's available.

How is 108 Mbps Enabled?

By default the router uses the slower 802.11b/g (54Mbps) mode. Change it by clicking Wireless Settings, then set the mode selection to 108 Mbps. The 108 Mbps mode must be set in all the wireless devices. Make sure that the Ethernet adapters are also set to 108 Mbps.

If the SSID is Not Seen in the Site Survey or Available Network Screens

If a computer's wireless adapter does not support 108 Mbps, the SSID of a 108 Mbps mode router will not show in the Available Network list. Using a 108 Mbps wireless adapter such as the WG511T, the router will display.

Other FAQ

  • 108 Mbps mode only works in channel 6.
  • Packet Bursting, Compression, Fast Frame, and other new SuperG features provided by Atheros were added in firmware release 3.0.2, available here.
