Dual Band PC Cards WAB501 or WAG511 Do Not Connect to WAB102 Access Point

Solution

WAB501 or WAG511, Dual Band PC cards, may not connect to WAB102 Dual Band Access Point in 802.11b mode, if the WEP security feature is enabled.

First, upgrade to the latest downloads for these products. The WAB102, for example, has had improvements to wireless performance.

If this does not solve the problem, test whether you can connect if WEP is turned off. If access is restored when WEP is off, it may be that the wireless equipment is too far apart. See Improving Wireless Range.

Be aware that turning off WEP has other effects:

  1. It increases your network performance.
  2. If you are using no other security, it considerably reduces your network protection. (There are rare cases, such as LANs with just game consoles, where the security may not be needed, though.)

Read the WAB102 instructions in the User Guide on p. 21. That section describes the screen where you change the "WEP" radio button to "Disable". Click Apply, and then Reboot, as described.

(Windows XP users need Administrator privilege.)
