Configuring MR814 or MR814v2 Router Encryption

Configuring MR814 or MR814v2 Router Encryption

Encryption is configured on the Wireless Settings menu, as described in the Reference Guide, pages 5-4 and 5-5.

To enable security, set:

  • Authentication Type — Usually left at automatic.
  • Encryption Strength — Set to 64-bit or 128-bit. All your computers must use the same encryption strength. 128-bit is not significantly more secure than 64-bit, and it does add a slight performance overhead.
  • Keys — Usually generated from an easy-to-read string of your choice called a "passphrase". To use, a type a word in the passphrase box and click Generate. All computers on your network must use the same key. For computers where the passphrase option is not available, the hexadecimal keys that were generated by the passphrase must be entered manually.

An added precaution, described in the Reference Guide, pages 5-2 and 5-3, is to have the router only accept traffic from your computers as identified by their unique Ethernet MAC addresses.
