Sharing Files Between Wired and Wireless Network with the ME102 or MA401

Sharing Files Between Wired and Wireless Network with the ME102 or MA401, Having WEP Enabled

By enabling WEP, wireless distance and speed will decrease by 40%-60% depending on distance and interference.

ME102 Configuration

  1. First open the NETGEAR ME102 AP USB management.
  2. Click the Configure.
  3. Select Default Settings, then click Get Value.
  4. Set the IP Address, and Subnet Mask, accordingly.
  5. Set the ESSID (this is your workgroup name) accordingly.
  6. Set WEP and select key 1, 2, 3, 4 or Disabled, as required.
  7. Set the Authentication to Shared Key.
  8. Set Preamble to Long.
  9. Set Auto Rate to Enable.
  10. Set Fragmentation Threshold to 2346.
  11. Set RTS Threshold to 2346.
  12. Click Set.
  13. Click Exit.

MA401 Configuration

  1. Open the Wireless LAN Configuration Utility and select Configuration.
  2. Select the Mode to Infrastructure.
  3. Select SSID and set to Workgroup Name. (The the same as on the access point.)
  4. Select TxRate and set to Fully Automatic.
  5. Select PSMODE and set to Disabled.
  6. Click Apply Changes.
  7. Select Encryption.
  8. Select encryption WEP and set to 64 Bit.
  9. Select Manual Entry and enter the same Algorithm as entered on the ME102.
  10. Select default Tx Key and set to "The Key #".
  11. Click Apply.
  12. Click OK.

Encryption is now enabled. Because of encryption, if the wired network is invisible to the wireless nodes and or the wireless nodes are invisible to the wired Ethernet network, it is because by enabling WEP encryption your files are made "private".

In order to view your private files, you must search by directory and map the drives.

  1. Select Start > RUN, and type \\computername (where "computername" is replaced by the name of your own computer.)
  2. Click OK.
  3. The computer is found and you can right-click the drive and select to map this drive.
  4. Double-click My Computer, and will notice the mapped drive. Double-click the mapped drive and the folders shared on that folder are now viewable and accessible.

This is the only way to share files if WEP is enabled. This is a functionality of Web encryption and no firmware will be modified to make the folders non-private with WEP enabled. That will defeat the purpose of encryption.
