Troubleshooting a USB Wired Network Adapter Card FA101, FA120 or EA101C

FA511 Adapter Installs in Windows XP as an ADMTek An985

An early version of the FA511 chipset was submitted to Microsoft, using this name. That's the (incorrect) name Windows XP expects to see. Fix this by explicitly choosing the FA511 driver yourself:

  1. Left click My Computer, select Properties, left-click Hardware.
  2. Select Device Manager, left-click the plus sign next to Network Adapters and double left-click the ADMTek AN985 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet adapter.
  3. Select Driver, left-click Update Driver. The Hardware Update Wizard appears.
  4. Select to install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and select Next.
  5. Select Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Select Have Disk
  8. Select Browse and select the CD-ROM drive in look in.
  9. Double left-click the Win2000 folder and select NETFA511.SYS.
  10. Select Open.
  11. Click OK. The Hardware Update Wizard displays.
  12. Select Netgear FA511 Cardbus Mobile Adapter.
  13. Click Next.
  14. A Hardware Installation window displays stating that the software has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility. Select to CONTINUE ANYWAY. The Program installs the software for the FA511. The Hardware Update Wizard displays stating that the Hardware Update Wizard has Completed installing the software for the Netgear FA511.
  15. Select Finish.
